From 1977 to the present, have you had sexual contact with another male, even once? You'll have to answer that question, word for word, on a donor form if you want to give blood in this country. The form, authorized by the Food and Drug Administration and reaffirmed 10 days ago by an FDA advisory panel, offers three possible answers: "yes," "no," or "I am female." If you check "yes," you're done. You're forbidden to donate blood.

How interesting... I had no idea we had rules like this. I've only given blood to a doctor for tests on myself... never donated blood for others.
What do you all think of this and the rules? Also please mind the COH!

Yes, the policy banning gays from donating blood should continue. Gay sex is still a high risk behavior and gays are much more likely to have aids or carry the hiv virus than the rest of the population. Travel to certain countries with high rates of aids infection, like most african countries, is also an activity than will ban one from donating blood.
Let's hope the political correctness doctrine never places the nation's blood supply at risk.

unfortunately, prior to increased awareness of how the disease was transmitted the group in the country witht he greatest infection rate was homosexual men. While that is no longer the case I think because of the high risk of that particular group, I believe it is a valid screening question. The comparison to black is not applicable in this instance because there is no bloodborne illness so linked with that group.
