I don't know where she lives but in larger cities such as NYC, Houston, Seattle, people who cannot afford health care have public systems available to them for care. Now, for a non emergent condition, you may have to wait. You get into the clinic systems there and you have to wait until you can get on the surgery schedule if that is what you need. It takes time and as always emergencies take priority.

She made a very foolish choice because where ever she went for care will bill her for that care and expect payment. In addition, she is going to have legal bills to pay. She may have a job but may be one of the unfortunate millions who does not get insurance benefits where they work. I see patients who are the "working poor" in the hospital all the time. Working to make a living, make ends meet, but are not offered health insurance where they work.

Before people cirticize a situation like this I think it is important to understand just how desperate a person can be. However, also note that a lot of doctors and hospitals will work out payment plans with patients if you discuss it with them. And for the price she pays for the cigs she smokes, she might be able to get some of her medical bills paid. Diane RN
