I've been wanting to write my opinion about the three for awhile now and the impact these social networking sites have on people and in todays life. I'll start by explaining my experience with them the best I can.

When I was younger... can't remember the exact age... but I started a Myspace profile as soon as Myspace got popular. I was 19 or 20 at the time out of high school I think. Myspace was great. Your own profile, customizable, and a great way to stay in contact with friends and family. Networking was amazing. Was also a great way to meet locals via the Internet as well without having to go on the prowl so to speak. I was a loyal fan for years and it has been a great experience. I've met many people whom are now best friends, stayed in contact with long lost friends from my youth, and also fellow classmates and family members that live across country / seas.

One thing I realized once graduating high school is how different life becomes. No longer is everyone locally that is in your age bracket at school on a daily basis and in one spot. The social networking becomes cut off in many ways. How else do you stay in contact with everyone you know? Meet new people? Yeah there is the phone or email like everyone has relied on in the past.. and even more in the past via postal mail. Realistically with the everyday business of daily life that can be an almost impossible task... and how else are you to meet someone new? Stay in contact with old friends? Family members? Well from my point of view the options are limited. You either:

Â

  1. Those friends / family really close you stay in contact via phone, text messages, or by snail mail.

  2. Meeting new people. Either you meet a new friend or other via word of mouth, at a bar, at church, or a workplace. There is of course the random meeting of someone at like say.. shopping. Still in busy day life... that too can be a daunting task.

  3. Online... via Myspace, Facebook, Plenty of Fish, Twitter, Match.Com... or other social networking sites.

So like I said before.. I am a big Myspace fan. I've stayed in touch with many friends and people where otherwise might of and realistically been an impossible task. Hell... I've even met my son's mother off of Myspace.

Now we come to Facebook. Facebook is the big rival to Myspace. Another social networking site that was made by a college student that just exploded with popularity. Facebook is different in how it works and I think it's important to note the differences between the two.

I didn't get into the Facebook thing until probably a good year or so ago. As a Myspace fan I was kind of bias of using another networking site. I mean... one was enough right? Now I realize I was wrong.

Myspace you can create your own profile, totally customize your profile, the html, music, photos, everything. In fact... it's so customizable that some peoples pages... and I'm not trying to be sexist here... that a lot of girls / womens profiles are so packed with photos, add-ons, music, etc, etc.. it borderline crashes your browser to view their page or could give you a seizure. This.. in my opinion is probably the biggest downside I have with Myspace. It got ridiculous and annoying fast. Was no really set standard anymore.

So I signed up for Facebook. More out of curiosity then anything but I also realized / found out I had many friends who only used Facebook.. and not Myspace. The same was visa versa! Also some used both. Biggest example I can give is all my family used Facebook and never Myspace so I missed out on being able to communicate them more efficiently for quite awhile. At first.. Facebook was foreign and different. Almost a little confusing which is hard for me to admit being a computer geek to begin with. I wasn't convinced how cool Facebook was until a couple months into it and as I found my friends. Now I find Facebook to be the best out of all three. More grown up. Easier to use. Easier on the eye. Easier on... well everything. Proof of this is how recently Myspace has tried to emulate many Facebook features........ I mean.. copying is the biggest form of flattery is it not? What I like about Facebook is its simplistic way of use. Nobody has crazy profiles of pink.. music..flashing backgrounds.. hundreds of photos and profile pages 50 scowls long, retarded profile schemes, etc, etc. That got REALLY got annoying on Myspace personally and fast.

So now I use Facebook on a daily basis.. and use Myspace... maybe once.. or twice every other week at most. I've had many friends delete their Myspace account and use Facebook as the only social networking site. I'd do the same, but many of us... I have some friends who only use Myspace... or only use Facebook so I'm stuck with keeping both. Doh! Each serve their purpose I suppose to be fair.

My opinion strongly is Facebook is the best one available now, the most grown up one, the most simple effective one, and the one I use on a daily basis. Both are competitive though. Each have millions and millions of users... and each has cell phone applications to support both. Twitter does too I should mention. Yet.. for the purpose of this article.. my personal favorite now and most practice one in my opinion is Facebook. I should note though that the college student who created Myspace and his buddies are multi-millionaires. Facebook... the college student who created that.. whom is one year younger then me I believe at 25 now.. is worth 1.5 billion dollars. NUTS!!! :)

Now.. on to Twitter. For those you don't know. Twitter is a social networking site like the Facebook and Myspace but with a big difference. You can only type a certain amount of characters and post them as updates. Think of it as... well.. an update.. pager style. You don't really have a profile like Myspace or Facebook... but you can update it with your status and what you are doing... in the amount of characters specified. I'm actually surprised how big it has got. It's a big hit now with celebrities and politicians. I personally don't use it as I fail to see the point. Myspace / Facebook is more the enough in my opinion. I don't need to know what everyone is doing at all times during the day, yet... despite my own opinion of it.. is very popular. To each is own. I heard the just went went public with stock and millions of dollars from investors poured into the Twitter application.So.. my question to my fellow Viners is... do you use Myspace / Facebook / or Twitter, and what is your opinion of them?

Note I do have fellow Viners as friends on my Myspace and Facebook. Even Newsvine themselves has a Newsvine "fan" page on Facebook I'm a member of. However you look at it or opinon of either of them... they are connecting people in a way that has never happened in the history of mankind. For better or for worse... these sites and technologies are here to stay. Whether they are for the best... or the worse.. only time can tell.

Thanks for your time and reading my article. Remember to adhere to the COH. :)

Dear "S.R.",

It seems to work best for my purposes to use MySpace. ( http://myspace.com/drsuleimandex ) I'm gathering Bands, Artists of various kinds from many genres of Music as well as the Visual Media, who I expect to write about at some point. I've looked at "Facebook", but moving over 2500 Bands, etc over to it is a task I don't have time for and keep the Articles coming, at least weekly, here at Newsvine. Besides, I have some legitimate Security Issues with them.

As for Twiiter...the concept of word limitation does not compute.

Your Friend,

'DeX'

Thanks for the response Rex! I understand how the logistical challenge if you will would be a pain in the butt. I know that. I agree with your sentiment of "Twitter" though. I'm not even going to get involved with that. To be honest... I see it as a celebrity, politician, high school girl vanity thing. I mean... lets be honest now. Why do I really care if your getting a facial at so and so time of the day? Lol. To me its more of a high school teenage type of thing.... yet.. shockingly.. its becoming more mainstream with celebs and politicians... yet... I guess we could maybe almost agree... act like narcissistic teens to begin with ;) Cheers. I'll check out your page though!

Sorry buddy. MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter are not my cup of tea. There is such a thing as putting out too much information on yourself, being that identity theft is big business these days.

If it works for you, more power to you. ;-D

I respect that! But being in my age bracket and my generation... its almost unheard of someone my age or a friend not having one or the other. Crazy huh? The privacy setting you can set... can make you safe from everyone you don't want though. Just thought I'd throw that out there! :) Hell you'd be more safe on their then maybe even Newsvine ;)

Good point.

I'm very careful about what I put out there and who what I put out there can be viewed by.

I also do not "friend" people I do not actually know simply because they're a friend of a friend or attend the school or belong to the same organization or have some other loose connection.

And then there's my (not highly recommend) Ace-in-the-hole against identity theft: I'm broke, have no credit - anyone who steals my identity will regret it for the rest of their life! :-}

I prefer Facebook. Myspace is too cluttered and clunky. After seeing others' myspace pages I didn't even WANT one of my own. I hate twitter. Facebook is definitely the best of the three, although I hate the cutesy "send a heart" or "send a unicorn" or "send a hug"...or "send a huge to a unicorn holding a heart" or whatever. I ignore all those requests and I hide things like Mafia Wars or the aquarium game. I'm only interested in seeing people's photos or comments, not how many points they scored in Bambi's Pink Heart Shaped Strawberry Cupcake Surprise game. Okay, I made that one up. I think.

Myspace used to be cool, now it's the ghetto of the internet. I swear, I can't go more than a day without getting a friend request and a thinly veiled proposition for cybering. It's less about connecting and more about collecting friends now.

I use Facebook mostly, because I like that it's more streamlined. I feel it's becoming too accessible though; that is to say, there's too many old people and too many childish gimmicks. It's not very much fun when your grandmother is looking at your photos and your 10 year old cousin is reading your blog posts.

I haven't gotten a Twitter yet, but I imagine I'll open one up sooner or later. Or maybe I'll pass on this trend and wait for the next website.

Facebook addict here. I used myspace for awhile but got bored of its sensory overload... Good for finding new bands though... Facebook makes it much easier and cheaper to stay in touch with my friends and family. Having grown up all over including Central Africa, Middle East, and Europe, my phone bills would be prohibitive to keep up with my buddies. It has been good for networking too. I may actually have a job lead in the works through FB... I've been unemployed for a few months too S.R.

LOL. I can agree with that kind of.. although its more for "old" people is a first for me. I guess I could kind of see that.. but still I see it as a little more mature. I'm 26 so I'm in the middle of it all I guess you could say. I started with Myspace.... and now like Facebook more... as do most of my friends of same age bracket. Yet my family like Facebook more too... so you son might be on to something. God.. please don't tell me that makes me old now!! Hahaha. ;) I think its kind of universal.. but Myspace does have the "younger" and I hate to say "immature" element to it where Facebook kind of dosen't.

Facebook started out, in its early days, catering to 'old people'. Well, relatively at least. Back when I first signed up for Facebook it was a site only for college students, and you had to have an email address from a college to even sign up. It didn't open up to High School students until some time around 2005.

Very true! It did start out as a college social networking thing... then expanded to everyone and anyone. I graduated high school in 2002 which is why Facebook wasn't around when I was in high school. I can only imagine how much of an impact it would of had in my social life had it been available when I was in high school.

Facebook user here - not obsessive user but check in daily on average. I find it's great for keeping up with extended family and old (really old - high school and college) friends. I tried MySpace a few years back - it was a requirement when my youngest started using MySpace that I be allowed to see his profile - but I hated it. (And it didn't take Son-Two long to create a second MySpace page - one for real and one for my eyes only; go figure!)

Division by Zero

Back in the really old days when I was in college (late 80's) there was a real facebook. As part of the registration process every student would get their picture taken. Within a week or so after add/drop was over, the facebook would be distributed. It had every student's photo, hometown, classification, and major listed. Of course these were the days before everyone was terrified of stalkers. It made it easy to find out who was who, to an extent that most people would probably be uncomfortable with today.

Hi Simp....I love, love, loved Myspace - till I discovered NV. (I will always keep my account). You would be surprized at the number of adults growing there...I had/have a great group of friends there and they got me through a tough time with their laughter. Twitter to me is b-o-r-i-n-g. but since it's allowed at work, I can get here from there so it has it's advantages, LOL. Interesting post by the way and really good to see you young man;) Hek

P.S. So when does the ladies NV calendar / Valentine Day Thing come out exactly? I haven't missed it did I?

The calender will be posted on Valentine's day by dkaz, how fitting huh? I'm so excited, I'm baring it all.....I lost my undies jumping up and down...but found a pillow in the nick of time.lol

Both my girls are on Facebook, so I don't want to tread there. I don't go on Myspace anymore, once in awhile I check in like every couple of months or so...but I don't miss it..it got as you say, junenile, but it served it's purpose. Yes, I agree much more adult based here and much more to scope through. I love it here:) Muah

Myspace is dead. Is has been for some time. The only reason my account is still active is because imeem changed itself over to Myspace Music and I NEED my music.

Facebook is still ok, but I use it less. It helps me keep in touch with friends I havent seen in a while, people from school, friends from back home, etc. Because Im still in college, I also find out about all of the campus events and local club events on FB.

Twitter is my main thing now. I get to find out about breaking news, comment with other people on sporting events, TV programs, and new movies, and keep in touch with friends. At first I didnt really care for it, but now that Ive gotten into it I think its great.

I kind of agree. The only reason I have an account still is because 1) some people I know only have Myspace.... 2) Some bands like my cousins have music on their and are not on Facebook 3) That's about the only reasons to keep Myspace. :) Like I said in my article... I use FB daily.. and Myspace once a week or so because of that very reason. If all my friends on Myspace were on Facebook.. I'd dump it in a heartbeat. Still it was a favorite of mine and served it's purpose for many years... just Facebook has become more in tuned with my lifestyle.

For my social networking it's Newsvine and Twitter. I have a FB account that I don't use. MySpace always struck me as too garish to be useful. I have no connection to my high school classmates (nor do I want one) and I'm already in contact with my friends from college and don't need a website for that. I mostly use Twitter for news and information plus it's a handy way to kvetch with my coworkers and friends. I've been on Newsvine for 3 1/2 years and consider it to be my main time sink. Years ago I maintained my own website, long before blogging became popular, so by the time blogging did catch on I was pretty much over it until Newsvine came along.

I'd say Facebook. I ended up on it after a cousin decided we could use it to stay in touch with the rest of the family. I'm not a slave to it--I check it a couple times a week. The only thing that drives me crazy is all the stupid games like mafia wars. Dont these people have anything to do?

Don't get me started on Mafia Wars, Gangsters, Farmville, and Drinks On Me. Lol. I block all of them. It can get annoying let alone 3rd party applications can get your passwords and personal information.. and some try to do so under the guise of an "application" or "add on". I reject / block all of them in most cases. Less of a headache and safer that way. While many are / might be genuine... some are not. Why take the chance? My daughter was prepping for a semester exam and she was reading some notes from her group discussion partners.

I picked them up and started reading them. They were all in text speak. I understood it but I had to laugh because its the new shorthand, I showed my daughter short hand and the blank stare she gave me cracked me up even more.

I will admit being from that in-between generation that remembers old school but is also pretty tech saavy.....if I forget my purse or wallet at home and Im on the road I just shrug it off no biggie......but OMG if I forget my phone......I will turn around and go home to get it.

I'm a corporate trainer and I ban the use of cell phones and laptops in most of my training sessions.

It is a very weak presenter who reads a PowerPoint verbatim but I've definitely seen them. If your presentation consists of reading from the slide, you're not only putting your audience to sleep, you're also insulting their intelligence.

or they are just tying to fill time. we've all had to do the 10-15 slide and 10 minute minimum thing

In the corporate world most people are not going to be upset with you if you finish early provided that you gave them everything they needed to get from your presentation. It's much better to finish 5 minutes early than to go 5 minutes long. It's better to leave them wanting more than to leave them wishing you'd quit earlier.

Hehe. I did AFJROTC in High School and was on the prestige Armed Rifle Drill Team... and I kind of... well... messed up my right hand in doing so. It's all good, but... when I write with a pen now... I can't get half a page of written words before it gets really sore. Why I love the keyboard. I can type all day on the thing before my hand becomes sore. Maybe my writing is bad... or it was because of the rifle throwing for AFJROTC I don't know... but.. if I ever had a job that required me to write several pages with my own hand writing daily.. I'd probably be in big trouble. Let alone in school. I guess I can thank technology thus far for helping me out. I may have a slight case of carpel tunnel. Never seen anyone for it yet. I wasn't the only student to get that doing the drill team for the AFJROTC though. I remember one girl getting I think it was called cortizone shots in her hand.... yikes! In retrospect I wish I'd never done it. Sorry kind of off-topic....

Why? I'm at home and in front of my computer the majority of the time lately. When I go out I'm out and the phone is off and Im engaged in what I'm doing.

Just last night I was in my room on the computer and I hear my phone -- text message came in. So I dropped what I was doing went to take it off its' charger and read the message......

Its' from my daughter.......she's in the effing living room.

I don't do that, yet often I'm besieged by requests for a printout of my slides. The funny thing is that I use a variation of the Takahashi Method for my slides, so a printout of them is almost meaningless. My slides are designed to support and entertain, not to provide the meat of my presentation. If someone can get what they need to know about your presentation just from a printout of the slides then why are you even there to present it? If that's the case you could save a ton of time just by handing out the slide printout and leaving.

Love my Facebook. I call it my happy place. I don't take friend requests from anyone I don't personally know. I have found several people I graduated with, and found out we have scattered all over the country in the last 30+ years. It is good to re-connect with old friends. I admit to having had a farm or two, and am on a few peoples mafia wars family list, but I only go on those when I am really bored, or snowed in for too long. I do have a bejewelled addiction I am working on, but that is about all. I agree with you about MySpace pages being too full of buttons, notes, and annoying backgrounds. Much too busy for me.

Facebook for me! I signed up for MySpace, then ignored my account and some former high school classmate got upset because she thought I was ignoring her, LOL. I have a good amount of online friends at FB, people I met at other online forums (Craigslist World Politics forum) and have to be careful about being overly political on FB as many of my HS friends and family are fairly conservative...I've had a couple de-friendings because of discussions gone wild.

I love being able to keep up with my cousins and their young families, to see photos of the babies' Halloweens on Halloween and such. I avoid most of the games, though I do like the quizzes.

But what is up with married couples who share one FB account? I have a couple of those in my friends, wierds me out.

I wonder if FB will still be so popular in 5 or 10 years.

The same goes with email accounts and IM accounts. I want to know who I'm talking to and signing in as your spouse just seems a little weird to me. One person (now de-friended) that I was discussing something or the other political with because of her status being something political vanished for a bit. Next message from "her" was that I was now speaking with her husband because I upset her so, blah blah blah, telling me I am ignorant and such.

I simply responded that I don't need a spouse to speak for me and how weak that seemed to me and that was the end of the "friendship." The woman and I had never been close in HS, so it was no great loss, but it amused me that her husband had the ability to use her login and that he kept such a close eye on her activities. Yikes...creepy!

I'm registered on more social networks than I care to admit. It's been quite some time since I've felt a sense of enthusiasm for the majority of them. This article, however, focuses on MySpace, Facebook and Twitter. Of these three I use Twitter the most. I find that Twitter and similar services are valuable in a news kiosk capacity. I can quickly learn things and have brief exchanges which can point me towards the place I want to be at that moment.

Like Div's comment at #8, I've been blogging for years, and also own a domain (currently inactive). I like the concept of social networks, but I do not view the concept as some superficial and rather pointless popularity contest. Don't even get me started on all the inherent security risks and the never ending parade of BS apps and widgets.

One Web 2.0 development I find interesting is the rise in DIY social networks such as those which can be created on services like Ning and Grou.ps. Yes, I've been exploring both playgrounds as an admin. Some days I find greater satisfaction from creating and managing various structures than contributing content to them.

i was a little late on the myspace thing, i didnt get an account until 2007. i liked the fact that i could post slideshows n such. i primarily use facebook now (i got an account about 2mths ago) and was coerced into doing so by my best friend and other school age friends on myspace. i found that facebook is absolutely better in that more of my family from LA have profiles. i check facebook daily, but now i only check my myspace page every other week or so. i dont even miss the graphics and slideshows all that much anymore. my only gripe is i wish facebook allowed music when u click on someones profile.

See, what just happened to me is why these social media things are nuts sometimes.

I talked to a buddy of mine Saturday (as in telephone) about going somewhere Sunday. I left a message about not being able to make it on voicemail, and talked to one other person live about not going. He then proceeds to post (ask) on FB about why didn't I go. What happened to a 15 sec call, voicemail or even a text. Crazy!!!

not over it

I finally signed up on Facebook last week. Newsvine was boring so I finally caved into my mother. She needed another neighbor in Farmville.

It's ok but it seems to be mostly stupid quizzes that I don't care about and a way for everyone in my family to tell me they are on the way to the grocery store (like I care), the doctor (like I care), or the f'ing bathroom (I really really don't care).

Please people, keep some things to yourself. Just because you have a place to tell everyone every detail of your life does not mean that you should.

I'm with you, NOI. Facebook is boooring! And now that I have friends and friends of friends on there, including some of their kids, I have to NOT say anything controversial! (Nearly Impossible!!) So I just don't say anything. I actually like the farm games, so I play with those. A lot of them post new pictures of themselves and their kids on a daily basis. I also have to know about their every sniffle and symptom. Gah!! And I can't just dump them, because I actually know them (horrors!!) Friends are Ruining Facebook for me!! (serious.)

Twitter amused me for about 48 hours. Then they had that big crash and I lost my login. yawn. didn't bother to go back.

I actually like MySpace, but is it me, or is MySpace waning in popularity? Or maybe it's Me that's waning in popularity? That's probably it. (sniff.)

farm games

I'm harvesting my freakin flowers as we speak. I need a harvesster but I'm saving up for a cottage.

I doubt it. I don't know what myspace is all about but I don't have anyone dying for me to be on it so it's probably crap. :) Or maybe it's me.....Nah!! hehe

I have some friends who are OCD addicted to the Mobsters game on Myspace. Lol.

I've tried all of them and none accomplished what I expected. I was hoping to find some cousins and didn't. Twitter: Too few words. FB: too much! MySpace: Too clunky and past it's date.
I just stick to NV overall.

I joined Myspace about three years ago. At first I was totally into it, but I quickly got bored. The only reason I joined was to keep in touch with my little brother who stays in Houston. Other than that I hardly logged into my account. I never used Twitter and I just recently created a Facebook account.

Myspace. Facebook. Twitter. is written conversations to socialize among people similar to speaking into a telephone in a verbal conversation.

I solve my own personal problems independently - so as an intellectual learner, I prefer on-line sites with topics that concern anything and everything happening in the world (away from those issues of family, friends, and any thoughts that direct me into personal matters)
