The Cold War ended over two decades ago, and many people have never lived under the shadow of nuclear annihilation. Still, a nuclear attack is a very real threat. Global politics are far from stable, and human nature has changed none in the last two decades. "The most persistent sound which reverberates through man's history is the beating of war drums". As long as nuclear weapons exist, there is always the danger they will be used.
Is nuclear war survivable? Only predictions exist, as some say yes, others say no. For some, especially those in large population centers, it may seem like an entirely futile endeavor. If it is survived at all, it will be by those who are mentally and logistically prepared for such an event. What should you do? Where should you take shelter?
I found this step by step guide to a nuclear attack interesting.......
thanks for the seed. i will take more time to study it when my brain isn't on "kid mode". it is alot of information to take in. i know this is a serious subject...but....when i was a kid in the 70's i once ask my mom what we would do if the soviets dropped the bomb, would we all die? she said "all i had to do was bend over as deep as i could, put my head between my ligs and kiss my ass good-bye." LOL... just a bit of light humor at the end of an long day.

LOL. For a lot of people that would be the case. In the article it told how almost everyone in Switzerland has a bunker for this purpose and the ones who don't each city / town does. Seems to me they are more prepared then probably most nations. Lets hope this never ever happens again.
legs not ligs...kids yes kegs!
i have been to the middle east w/ the military and i think you have to have a personal bunker b4 your 16th birthday over there. looks like we are the only ones, with the exception of the "leaders" in washington d.c. that will be vaporized.
This story left out the key factor of after the blast you will be surviving with people who will rob, steal, rape and kill to get whatever they want. If for some reason you do survive you will probably emerge from you're bunker to a hell you will wish you never saw.Katrina times a million and no law! Then with all the dead and decaying and no way to properly dispose of them plague and disease will run rampant and all would be dead within five more years anyhow
True. Which in that case.. I'll want to have a nice small house out in the sticks that is self sustaining until the craziness ends. :P Being in a large city of any size would be a nightmare.
On the other hand, most people in sticks have guns...and if the choice is between his neighbor of 30 years or the rich yuppie who just bought the old Smith place who is he going to come "asking" for supplies when TSHTF?
Maddod ,your Mom had the right idea. I don't think we will be nuked conventionally,it will be smuggled in and detonated. To many people think of nuclear weapons has these huge monster missiles, when in fact you could probably get a couple into the trunk of a car. Even for the survivors of the blast chances are slim. With that in mind I say, do unto others before they do you in.
If a nuclear war between the United States and Russia happens there will be nowhere to run, humanity will go extinct in less than a decade. It doesn't matter if you're in a bunker in the mountains of Montana, or the jungles of Tazmania, nuclear war is an extinction level event. Nuclear winter will mean very little or no sunlight for decades, perhaps centuries, during which plantlife will die out. And, of course, there will be no law or systems of government to protect you from scavengers and desperate survivors seeking whatever it is they're seeking.
Nuclear fallout contains several isotopes which are lethal to most animals, especially strontium-90, which has a chemistry akin to that of calcium. This means that it replaces calcium in your teeth and bones, and irradiates you for the duration of its 28 year half-life. You won't survive before it stops emitting radiation.
The only way to survive a nuclear war is to ensure that one does not happen.
Nukes are one of those things I wish humanity could dis-invent.
My biggest recommendation is everyone should have a basic emergency kit including (1) 10 gallons of drinking water (2) a store of chlorine for purifying more water if needed (3) enough food for about 1 month, more if you suspect longer survival without outside assistance will be necessary (4) complete first aid kit (5) multitool, tent, polyester blankets, emergency blankets, or other gear that may be required if you can't reach shelter.
Keep the kit in your car, because your car is usually always near you and accessible regardless of time of day.
A kit like this will be helpful regardless of what emergency occurs, even tornados, blizzards, floods, earthquakes, etc.
Nukes are something I wished would be only a reality in video games... //.~\

QFT - Unless your in the underground, super duper, Logans Run bubble city, you are screwed. Carousel begins.....
Well, considering nuclear winter will kill off all life, so no more food after you go thru what you've already got, there's really not a lot of point in even trying to survive.
Just stock up on shotgun ammo for when the mutated zombies come for you.
I'm gonna go for a "Hell's janitor" medal
Lol.
Doubt anyone would get the hell's janitor reference... but every guy is aware of the impending zombie threat lol
good post
